Four more sailors lost off California coast

The sailing community in San Francisco is a tight one. Amid race closures and grieving for the lost sailors of Low Speed Chase, there is news of another fatal sailing accident -- this one in southern California.

News sources first reported that a sailboat may have struck another much larger boat such as a tanker or bulk carrier. However, recent reports of the fatal recreational boating accident indicate that investigators are looking at whether the sailboat may have struck an island.

School bus accident claims one life

Different types of motor vehicles have different types of restrictions. Tractor trailers have weight restrictions and inspections. Ambulances with their sirens on and lights flashing have the right of way. Busses must stop at rail road crossings. And vehicles are required to stop for pedestrians in cross walks.

Sadly, that did not happen recently when an 84-year-old California woman was fatally struck by a school bus loaded with elementary school children. The fatal bus accident occurred when the woman was in the crosswalk.

Sailing fatalities for the first time in Farallones race

One of the glorious advantages to living in the San Francisco Bay area is the access to a host of recreational activities. The mountains are within close range for skiing, mountain biking and parasailing. The water draws boaters, skiers, sailors and scuba divers.

One recreation activity resulted in several deaths and reported sorrow within a tightly knit sailing community. Several fatalities occurred during the Full Crew Farallones Race -- an annual sailing race since 1907. For the first time since the race's inception, several crew members died.

Car jumps curb and kills two bicyclists on sidewalk, injures one

Just last week we posted the news of a fatal accident in which a bicyclist struck and killed a senior citizen who was in the crosswalk. A fatal accident has occurred this past week as well, although this time it was the bicyclists who were fatally injured.

According to a news report, a family of three was bicycling along Treat Boulevard in the Contra Costa County city of Concord. They were on the sidewalk when a Cadillac Escalade jumped the curb, lopped off the top of a fire hydrant and hit the family before coming to a stop when it struck a building. The Saturday morning outing for the family turned into a fatal accident.

Fatal accident allegedly caused by speeding bicyclist

Recreational bicyclists on our San Francisco streets should know that they must obey traffic rules. They need to ride on the right side of the road, or in bicycle lanes where marked. They should obey all traffic signal. A bicyclist should stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk, just as a car should.

A recreational bicyclist has allegedly caused the death of a senior citizen. A 71-year-old pedestrian was struck by a cyclist while in the crosswalk of Castro and Market streets. Both the cyclist and the 71-year-old were injured and taken to areas hospitals. The cyclist was treated and released. The 71-year-old's death was a result of injuries suffered in the accident.

Jury awards $2.9 million for wrongful death truck accident

The United Parcel Service truck drivers are well known for their brown uniforms and polite manners in the television commercials. The company enjoys a good reputation nationwide. Unfortunately, one of those UPS drivers changed lanes on a highway and, according to a Sacramento jury verdict, caused the wrongful death of a 52-year-old woman.

According to a news report, the 52-year-old was travelling from her home in Bend, Oregon, to visit her adult children in Los Angeles, California. Witnesses to the truck accident said that the UPS truck changed lanes which caused a collision with the 52-year-old driver's SUV and the truck. The accident happened immediately prior to Easter. One witness said the highway was littered with Easter baskets.

Elderly tourist dies of injuries after accident involving bicycle

San Francisco is a magnet for tourists from all walks of life. Between recreational activities, cultural sights and local entertainment, there is a lot in this California area that can engage out-of-state tourists.

One such tourist, a 68-year-old woman, was crashed into by a 23-year-old bicyclist who ran a red light and struck the woman. The 68-year-old woman from Washington, D.C., suffered a traumatic brain injury, and died later of her injuries. Head injuries are among the most serious, and falls by the elderly can often result in serious injuries.

Wet roads may have led to multiple car crashes, 1 fatality

San Francisco Bay residents are no stranger to wet road conditions that can cause accidents, mud slides and fallen trees. However, motorists may not be aware that speed limits apply to good road conditions. When conditions worsen, motorists are supposed to reduce their speed accordingly.

It was reported that rain storms caused not only power outages for thousands in the San Francisco area last week, but may have also contributed to several car accidents, including one fatal head-on collision.

Woman sentenced for texting-while-driving fatal crash

States across the nation are cracking down on the use of cell phones for texting while driving. It is a dangerous distraction that can lead to a car accident, sometimes leading to death. A news report revealed that one woman who caused such an accident was sentenced this week to five years in prison.

Although her car did not directly kill another person, the 23-year-old Sacramento woman pleaded no contest to the charge of causing an accident that resulted in the death of a 64-year-old motorcyclist. According to the news report, she was texting while driving when the wheel of her car struck the 64-year-old's motorcycle. The impact threw the man from his bike and into oncoming traffic, where he was struck by another car.
